Reviews

Dottie West perlays country hits against a couple of evergreens like “Old Cape Cod” and “I’m Sorry” and tosses in the folk-orientated “Until It’s Time for You to Go.” But, of course, her version of “Broken Hearted Melody” and “D.I.V.O.R.C.E” will be icing on the cake to her many, many fans.
Pop and country biggies from the present and days long past help weave Dottie West’s concept of the feminine creature. From the misty “Old Cape Cod” to the poignant strains of “The End Of The World” and “Broken Hearted Melody” and the knockdown, dragout “Harper Valley, P.T.A.,” Dottie paints a multi-faceted portrait of woman. Nice work here.
Despite some of the simple-minded ditties in this album (“D-I-V-O-R-C-E”), one of those incredible spelling songs, and (“Love Is Just A Pain In The Heart”) Dottie West comes off as the total professional in “Feminine Fancy” (RCA LS P4095). If this is the new Nashville sound, it’s been long overdue; Miss West’s clarity of tone, there’s a great quality of yearning and longing in her voice-makes it possible for auditors to understand ALL the words to “Harper Valley P.T.A.” (For us, it was the first time). But the continual raising of second choruses a tone in many of the selections becomes, finally, something of an annoyance. Capsule comment: refeened hillybilly.
