Reviews

She shines on Tulsa Ballroom, a blue-note, 1940s-sounding number just made for slow dancing. Her vocal chords run a gamut of intensities—for instance, on The Night Love Let You Down, she moves from whispery, sensual growls to throaty, soaring outbursts. “New Horizons” is a showcase of love songs, in one form or another. I Make A Great Cup Of Coffee is an upbeat country/pop piece about what follows the one-night stand, and Overnight Sensation addresses the probability that what will happen overnight will be, well, sensational.
The Woman In Love With You and If I Ever Cross Your Mind are good, solid, simple love ballads; Garrett and Dorff do seem to know when to ease off the orchestrated overdrive and let Dottie’s voice come front and center. He’s All I Need is a basically country ballad about finding a romantic replacement (“He’s not all you were/But he’s all I need”). On all the cuts, Dottie sings with conviction and enthusiasm, giving some of the material, like Who’s That Look In Your Eye, a soulful sassiness and a bluesy pop-market appeal. She may have been “raised on country sunshine,” but now she’s gleaming in areas outside the cornfield. (Music City News, September 1983)
